The EGR system works by returning a small portion of exhaust gas to the engine's combustion chambers through the intake manifold, lowering combustion temperatures and therefore reducing the amount of NOx emitted.

It connects the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold and is controlled by either a vacuum or a built-in electric step motor. The EGR valve connects the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. The EGR valve is normally closed. There is no EGR flow when the engine is cold, at idle, or during hard acceleration. What code will a bad EGR valve throw? Some of the most common reasons to remove an EGR valve are to increase horsepower, lower engine operating temperatures and improve fuel efficiency.

The NOx emissions will flow unregulated through the combustion chamber and out of the exhaust pipe. The excessive NOx emissions will show up during a smog test and cause a failure.

What happens if you remove the EGR valve? So what happens when you remove the EGR? The fuel will no longer be efficient and the emissions of your car will increase. A damaged EVR can cause different damages and problems with the slow and operation of the EGR system and it will affect performance.

When your EGR valve is faulty, the emission will increase which might cause overheating. Once the engine is overheating, it is only a matter of time before it destroys the engine. The piston might seize or expand because of high temperature. It might also destroy some other components like valves and crankshaft. It is not advisable to drive with a faulty EGR, be patient and let it be fixed.
